One of the advantages of living in Victoria is that a weekend away does not always require a ferry or flight. You can be at an oceanfront hotel in Oak Bay, above Finlayson Arm, on the Sooke coast or deep into the west side of the Island without leaving Vancouver Island.
These five stays are deliberately different. Prices, packages and seasonal openings change, so treat this as a guide to the style of trip rather than a rate sheet.
Oak Bay Beach Hotel: the easy luxury staycation
Oak Bay Beach Hotel is the option when you want a real break without spending half the weekend travelling. The hotel sits on the Salish Sea in Oak Bay with ocean-view rooms and suites, the Boathouse Spa, heated seaside mineral pool, hot tubs and sauna facilities.
Because it is still in Greater Victoria, you can leave work on Friday and be settled before dinner. That makes it particularly good for an anniversary, spa weekend or one-night reset where a long drive would defeat the point.
The surrounding area has enough to fill a relaxed weekend: Beach Drive, Willows Beach, Oak Bay Marina, the village and waterfront walks. It is also one of the best places to understand the residential appeal of Oak Bay.
Sooke Harbour House: oceanfront without going far up-Island
Sooke Harbour House sits at Whiffin Spit with the ocean immediately outside the property. The hotel was extensively renewed before reopening and now combines individually designed rooms and suites with a restaurant, cafe and wine cellar.
Sooke works well when you want the West Coast feeling but do not want the longer drive to Tofino. You can build the weekend around coastal walks, beaches, fishing, hiking or simply staying close to the hotel.

Villa Eyrie Resort: a view-focused escape above Finlayson Arm
Villa Eyrie Resort sits high above Finlayson Arm on the Malahat, with sweeping views toward the inlet and surrounding mountains. The resort combines rooms and suites with Alpina Restaurant and a spa.
This is the one to choose when the view is the central attraction. It is close enough to Victoria for an easy one- or two-night stay but feels physically removed because of its elevation and hillside setting.
Villa Eyrie can also be used as a starting point for the Cowichan Valley. A wine-tasting day north of the Malahat pairs naturally with a night at the resort.
Wickaninnish Inn: classic Tofino with the Pacific outside
Wickaninnish Inn is one of Vancouver Island's defining luxury stays. It sits on the edge of the Pacific near Chesterman Beach, surrounded by rainforest and exposed West Coast scenery.
The drive from Victoria means this is better as a two- or three-night trip than a quick overnight. That travel time is also part of what makes Tofino feel like a real escape.
I would choose the Wickaninnish when the goal is to spend time outside, watch weather move across the coast and return to a high-service hotel rather than fill the schedule with city activities.
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge: when the journey is part of the experience
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is in a completely different category from a normal weekend hotel. The remote seasonal lodge is set on 600 acres in Clayoquot Sound and has 25 luxury safari tents surrounded by forest, water and wildlife habitat.
The 2026 season runs from late May through late September. This is not the place for a spontaneous one-night escape. It is a planned wilderness trip where arrival, activities, meals and the setting are part of one experience.
For someone who values privacy, nature and access to a landscape that feels difficult to reach, it is one of the most unusual luxury stays on the Island.
Pick the level of travel you actually want
For almost no travel, choose Oak Bay. For an easy coastal drive, choose Sooke. Villa Eyrie feels removed without being far. Tofino is a proper road trip. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge turns access itself into part of the vacation.
That same pattern shows up when people search for homes. Some buyers want to be 15 minutes from downtown. Others will happily trade convenience for land, privacy or a dramatic setting. There is no single definition of Vancouver Island luxury.
Season changes the character of the trip
Summer gives you the longest days, patios and easier access to outdoor activities, but it is also the busiest time for Tofino and many Island destinations. Fall and winter can be excellent for storm watching, spa weekends and quieter restaurants, especially if you enjoy dramatic weather rather than planning every hour outside.
For remote properties, seasonal operation matters more. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, for example, is a warm-season destination. Always confirm road conditions, ferry or flight arrangements and the hotel's current operating dates before building the rest of the trip around one reservation.
