A Vancouver Island winery day is as much about the drive, landscape and pace as the tasting itself. From Victoria, you can stay close to the Saanich Peninsula or continue north into the Cowichan Valley, where vineyards, farms and small communities create a completely different rhythm from the city.
I would rather visit three wineries slowly than race through eight tasting rooms. The six below give you enough variety to plan several different days. Tasting hours and reservation requirements change, particularly by season, so confirm them before leaving home.
Emandare Vineyard and Winery, Duncan
Emandare Vineyard and Winery sits on Norcross Road in Duncan in the heart of the Cowichan Valley wine country. It is a smaller estate with an organically farmed vineyard and a strong sense of place, which is exactly the kind of stop I enjoy on an Island wine day.
I would put Emandare first on the list if you want to see how a boutique vineyard, winery and residential setting can come together on one property. The estate is close enough to Duncan to pair easily with lunch and other Cowichan stops, but the vineyard still feels distinctly rural. Check Emandare directly for current tasting and visiting information before you go, as hours and availability can change through the year.
Unsworth Vineyards, Mill Bay
Unsworth Vineyards is one of the easiest estates to make the centre of a wine day because it combines tastings, vineyard tours and a restaurant. The winery describes its approach around the coastal character of the Cowichan Valley and offers guided experiences as well as its tasting room.
I would give Unsworth more time than a quick flight. Book lunch or a vineyard tour, then use the estate as the anchor before adding one or two nearby stops. It is in Mill Bay, which also makes it one of the first major Cowichan wine stops when driving north from Victoria.
Blue Grouse Estate Winery, Duncan
Blue Grouse Estate Winery is south of Duncan in the Cowichan Valley and offers tastings, tours and group experiences. Reservations are required for tastings according to the winery's current visitor information.
The estate works well for visitors who like a polished winery setting but still want to feel connected to the vineyard. Blue Grouse is about 50 kilometres north of Victoria, according to the winery, so it is close enough for a day trip without turning the visit into a full Island road trip.
Averill Creek Vineyard, North Cowichan
Averill Creek Vineyard sits on the slopes of Mount Prevost and offers tastings on its garden terrace along with more in-depth winery experiences. The property is known for the wide Cowichan Valley view from the tasting area.
This is a good stop when setting matters as much as the wine. The estate is farther north than Mill Bay and Cobble Hill, so it pairs naturally with lunch in Duncan or another North Cowichan stop.
The winery recommends reservations, particularly if you want more than a simple walk-in tasting.
Cherry Point Estate Wines, Cobble Hill
Cherry Point Estate Wines is in Cobble Hill along the Vancouver Island Wine Route. The vineyard dates to 1990, and the property combines a tasting room with a seasonal bistro.
Cherry Point is a natural addition when you are already visiting wineries around Mill Bay and Cobble Hill. The winery's current information recommends reservations for the bistro, which is seasonal, while the tasting room has broader opening periods.
The rural Cobble Hill setting also gives prospective property buyers a feel for the land that makes the area attractive for vineyards, equestrian estates and acreage homes.
Church & State Wines, Brentwood Bay
Church & State Wines is the outlier geographically because its Vancouver Island estate is in Brentwood Bay on the Saanich Peninsula rather than in Cowichan. That makes it much easier to combine with a shorter Victoria-area day.
The property has a tasting bar, bistro and vineyard setting, and it pours wines from both its Vancouver Island and Okanagan estate vineyards. Church & State also hosts events and seasonal experiences, so it is worth checking the calendar rather than assuming every visit is the same.
Its location works particularly well with a Saanich Peninsula drive or a visit to Butchart Gardens.
How to plan a better wine day
Choose a driver before the first tasting. If everyone in the group wants to taste, book a tour, limousine or other transportation service. Build in a real lunch rather than trying to fit food around tastings.
Three stops can easily fill a day once you include driving, conversations, lunch and time on the grounds. The experience is better when you are not constantly watching the clock.
Also remember that Vancouver Island wine is seasonal in ways a city restaurant is not. Some patios and bistros reduce hours outside summer, and private events can affect availability. Check each estate directly the day before you go.
Leave room in the car for more than wine
A good winery day usually includes bottles, but the Cowichan Valley is also farm country. Depending on the route and season, you may pass farm stands, bakeries, cheese makers, cideries and small food producers. A cooler in the vehicle can be handy if you plan to shop along the way.
If you are buying wine, ask what is only available at the estate. Tasting rooms often have small-production releases, library bottles or club wines that are harder to find in Victoria shops. That can make the stop more interesting than simply tasting labels you already know.
